Take Care Of Your Jewelry

Gold and silver shine so well because the surface is finely polished and thus reflects light off of larger sections of material. When tiny scratches marr these highly polished surfaces the light is broken up and the shine fades away. Using a fine soft polishing cloth regularly can help reduce the smallest scratches and improve the shine, but the best way to get rid of scratches is to not get them in the first place.

While talking toW1zard007, I was given much helpful information that I would like to share with you.

  • When handling heavy or sharp, abrasive ovjects, you should remove your rings.
  • Harsh chemicals, such as bleach, should not contact your jewelry as this could loosen settings.
  • when storing gold jewelry always use some type of separator, rings with stones can cut finely polished surfaces with these stones and reduce the shine of your gold.
  • Silver can also be scratched in a similar way. In addition to separating the items, rubbing the items with a cleaning cloth will remove residues that may be on the silver. These may cause additional corrosive effects on the silver and tarnish will be faster in arriving.
  • If placed in an airtight container such as a small sealable bag, oxygen cannot get to the silver and cause tarnish.
  • When using bags to hold necklaces, be sure to allow the clasp to just stick out of the top before you seal the bag (This will help to keep the necklace from getting tangled).
  • If you notice that your jewelry is getting dull, use 1 part ammonia and 6 parts water, and soak the jewelry for no more than one minute. Additional cleaning can be done with an old toothbrush, as the bristles are soft and smooth.
  • Some items may be worn at the same time, care should be taken to avoid having one scratch the other. Rings on each finger may cause some scratches where the two connect each other.
  • Earrings can get damaged by hairspray and other cosmetic applications and care should be taken to avoid contacting the earrings with these items.
  • When wearing several earrings at one time, the smaller, shorter ones should be worn above the hanging, dangling ones to avoid scratches (as you move the earrings sway and touch each other).

This list is not yet complete and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
